Higgins Group, one of the most forward-thinking construction companies in the UK, has achieved Planet Mark certification. This is the construction company’s 11th year of business carbon footprint reporting.
Achieving Planet Mark is based on the commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability in its business operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders.
Since certifying to Planet Mark, the company has set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually. Over the next year, Higgins Group will be working towards reducing its carbon emissions and sharing its journey with its community to inspire others. By being more strategic about its environmental responsibility, the company will be able to significantly increase its positive impact and hope to encourage continual improvements within its community.
“The progress Higgins Construction has made this year is incredible. It takes an undeniable amount of graft and determination to make such impressive strides. The sector is such an important battleground in the fight against climate change, and I can only hope more companies take Higgins’ progressive approach in cutting carbon. I commend the team for all of its hard work – it has truly paid off.”
Higgins Group is a business that is committed to building better, stronger, safer and more sustainable communities. The company has created several initiatives that will help continually reduce its carbon footprint and improve its sustainability. These include recycling or reusing materials wherever possible on job sites, reducing energy and water use throughout the construction process, and complying with all the requirements of our ISO 14001 accreditation. Higgins is also a member of the Considerate Construction Scheme membership which helps promote on-site responsibility to lessen the impacts of construction on local communities.
The construction industry is one of the largest polluters in the United Kingdom, with the built environment being responsible for nearly 20% of the nation’s carbon emissions. Sweeping changes must be made to the industry in the face of climate change, from on-site practice to creating sustainable and circular supply chains. As well as producing sustainable buildings, clients are increasingly demanding sustainable supply chains and internal logistics. A robust carbon reduction policy is becoming essential in client acquisition and retention in the sector.
As part of the Planet Mark certification, Higgins Group has committed to making a year-on-year reduction.
