Certification story

Hive Cleaning, a commercial office cleaning company that prides itself on providing an extraordinary level of service and sustainable and ethical values, has achieved Planet Mark certification.

This is Hive Cleaning’s fourth year of business carbon footprint reporting and Planet Mark certification. Since certifying with Planet Mark, the company has set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually.

Over the next year, the company will work further towards reducing its carbon emissions and sharing its journey with its community to inspire others. By being more strategic about its environmental responsibility, the company will be able to significantly increase its positive impact and hope to encourage continual improvements within its community.

Through Planet Mark, Hive Cleaning has protected endangered rainforest thanks to Cool Earth; a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation. Its pledge through Cool Earth directly supports the Asháninka community in Central Peru.

It has also helped the Eden Project – an educational charity building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how we can work together towards

Steve Malkin
Founder and CEO
Planet Mark
“It’s a great pleasure to work with Hive Cleaning over the past five years. The team has made some great steps forward in their sustainability journey, from the sourcing of their products to greening their business processes. Environmentalism is at the heart of what Hive Cleaning does, and it’s made clear to employees and customers alike. I look forward to seeing more carbon reductions in their future.”
Louis Beaumont
Managing Director
Hive Cleaning
“Sustainability has been at the heart of our business from the very beginning and we are 100% committed to decreasing our carbon emissions. This meant not only constantly reviewing and improving our operations and technologies, but also collaborating with our partners and clients, providing training for our staff and educating ourselves. Working with The Planet Mark was an excellent step in helping move forward on our journey towards Net Zero Carbon.”

Louis added “We are pleased to have received our certification for the 5th consecutive year, helping to review and focus our attention on where improvements can be made, and emissions reduced. We look forward to the future and our ongoing partnership with Planet Mark.”

Hive Cleaning has always been determined to create a truly sustainable business with environmental stewardship and strong ethical values at its heart. Sourcing eco-friendly cleaning products instead of harsh chemicals, toilet paper made from bamboo, zero to landfill waste management, using green technologies, buying British, all help Hive Cleaning to be truly sustainable. The company also directs a portion of the profit from each contract towards supporting a beehive in their London apiary.  In 2023, Hive started a reforestation and rewilding project in Devon too, where they had acquired a parcel of meadowland, aiming to turn it into a broadleaf forest in the next 15 years.

The cleaning industry is primed for sustainable change. By taking close care of supply chains, reducing plastic, and becoming knowledgeable about the impacts of chemicals in cleaning supplies and their correct disposal, the industry and its clients can quickly become much more resilient to the coming impacts of climate change. As more businesses become more aware of the environmental impact of their supply chains, the cleaning industry will have to react accordingly to promote sustainable products and practices.

Hive Cleaning has achieved Carbon Neutral status.

Case study

Measure

Monitoring and recording their suppliers’ and partners’ sustainability aims has been an important exercise tool for Hive and has created more efficient relationships. Hive have been measuring Scopes 1, 2 and 3 of their carbon footprint since their baseline year of 2017 and have been the first company to use our bespoke data submission platform. Another key measurement for Hive, in addition to its carbon footprint, was the business’ social value contribution which provided a more holistic view of its impact on the planet and society.

Engage

Through workshops, engaging with environmental charities and promoting green technologies, Hive is encouraging sustainability within not only its own organisation but also among clients. Their ‘Adopt a Beehive’ scheme increases the urban bee population and is a fantastic way of getting clients engaged and empowered through sustainability and biodiversity issues.

Hive has adopted a sophisticated training programme with Planet Mark partner UhUb which covers all aspects of cleaning operations, including sustainability awareness. Everyone who works with Hive is given the tools and resources to implement sustainability practices in their everyday personal and professional lives.

Hive also conducts regular seminars on new practices and green technologies, which is reinforced through its in-house communication platform where sustainability topics can be discussed among the wider team.

Communicate

Hive’s ethos and sustainability efforts are embedded into all its communication materials, including tenders, blogs, social media platforms and websites.

Hive has seen first-hand the power of communicating the benefits of sustainable products and practices, with many of its stakeholders adopting them for their own companies.

Future targets

Reduce carbon emissions by at least 2.5% each year

To recertify next year Hive Cleaning must reduce emissions by 2.5%.

Aim to reduce carbon emissions by 5% each year

A 5% year-on-year reduction is the target reduction recommended by Planet Mark.
