The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), the trade association for the UK garden industry, dedicated to helping develop the industry and its member businesses, has achieved Planet Mark certification.
This is HTA’s second year of business carbon footprint reporting and Planet Mark certification. Since certifying to Planet Mark, the company has set a target to reduce emissions by 5% annually.
Achieving Planet Mark is based on the commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability in its business operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders.
Over the next year, the company will be working towards reducing its carbon emissions and sharing its journey with its community to inspire others. By being more strategic about its environmental responsibility, HTA will be able to significantly increase its positive impact and hope to encourage continual improvements within its community.
“Well done to the Horticultural Trade Association on Planet Mark certification. HTA are doing things the right way, not only by committing to make a positive impact within their own organisation, but by increasing climate action among its many members, too. This will create a wave of change well beyond its own walls that will have tremendous impact. This kind of leadership is a delight to see. I look forward to continuing to work with HTA to drive systemic change for our planet.”
HTA has implemented a Sustainability Roadmap for 2025 to spread among its members. The HTA’s Sustainability Roadmap is a framework for helping members to increase the commercial, environmental and social value their business delivers. It aims to build on the good practice evident among HTA members so as to put the UK horticulture and landscaping industry at the leading edge of sustainable business. After consulting with members, HTA has set a number of goals, including targets on carbon reduction, plastic and water use to help elevate the entire industry’s action on climate change.
Membership organisations have an opportunity to deliver climate action at scale. As curators and disseminators of best practices, membership organisations can lead from the front in climate change. However, to do so, it is important that such organisations are able to walk the walk on sustainability by implementing robust policies to combat climate change. By becoming sustainable pioneers themselves, trade associations are able to build trust and authority on a major global challenge for their industry.
As part of the Planet Mark certification, HTA has committed to making a year-on-year reduction.
