Certification story

Institute of Directors (IoD), the UK’s longest running organisation for professional leaders, has achieved Planet Mark certification.

Founded in 1903 and incorporated by Royal Charter in 1906, the IoD has an extensive history of supporting business leaders. As business leaders increasingly concern themselves with sustainability, the IoD recognises climate change as one of the leading issues affecting business today. The Institute has taken a number of measures to help improve sustainability among its networks, such as the launch of its Sustainable Business content hub and special interest group, and in sponsoring the Best Newcomer Award at the upcoming Planet Mark Awards.

Through Planet Mark, IoD has protected endangered rainforest thanks to Cool Earth; a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation. Its pledge through Cool Earth goes directly towards supporting the Asháninka community in Central Peru.

It has also helped the Eden Project – an educational charity building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how we can work together towards a better future.

Steve Malkin
Founder and CEO
Planet Mark
“I am in awe of the progress made by the Institute of Directors over this past year. A 40% cut in carbon is sensational, and everyone involved should be applauded. The power of this change will be felt throughout their expansive network, sending signals to businesses and organisations of all sizes that powerful and radical action on climate can be achieved by all.”
Joe Fitzsimons
Senior Policy Advisor
Institute of Directors
“The sustainability agenda is a leading priority of business leaders up and down the country. As part of the IoD’s growing commitment to cutting its carbon footprint, we are delighted to be Planet Mark Certified. At the same time, we continue to support directors as they seek to boost their own organisations’ green credentials. Access to training, advice, and incentives will be vital to support businesses as they develop a broader understanding of decarbonisation strategies, and Planet Mark’s effort plays a crucial part in this.”

Sustainability has never been more important for modern businesses. The need to act is in the interest of both the planet and the security of a healthy economic future. According to PwC, 64% of UK CEOs see climate change as a threat to their business. Strong leadership and collaboration among leaders are integral to positive action on businesses’ carbon footprints.

Future targets

Reduce carbon emissions by at least 2.5% each year

To recertify next year IoD must reduce emissions by 2.5%.

Aim to reduce carbon emissions by 5% each year

A 5% year-on-year reduction is the target reduction recommended by Planet Mark.
