We recognise that transparent communication is essential for transformational change and we quantifiably contribute to 7 SDG’s.
Long Way Up, a television production for Apple TV+ documenting the approximately 13,000 miles journey made by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman on electric Harley Davidson LiveWire motorcycles from Ushuaia, Argentina to Los Angeles, USA has achieved certification to Planet Mark.
Long Way Up’s total carbon footprint was 212.4 tCO2e and the relative carbon footprint. Long Way Up achieved a total carbon reduction of 38.0 tCO2e, a decrease of 15% through the use of electric motorcycles and electric support vehicles and avoiding flights by using video conferencing.
The carbon saved is the equivalent of 94,293 miles driven in aon average car.
The 2020s is the most important decade in human history. What we do in this period determines the course of humanity. Acting now on carbon emissions can avert irreversible. environmental damage and hold on to a planet that is fit for life.
“We are delighted to award the Long Way Up certification to Planet Mark. The project is a shining example of the increasing importance of our relationship with technology and nature. It sets a fantastic precedent to the industry that entertainment and environment can work in harmony. At Planet Mark, we recognise the importance of communication in inspiring people around the world with a vision of what is possible in creating a thriving planet. Through its dissemination via Apple TV, the Long Way Up programmes will broadcast a significant message about the communities affected by climate change, deforestation and biodiversity loss.”
As well as helping to validate the choice of electric vehicles, using the electric motorcycles, supplied by Harley Davidson, immediately delivered a carbon saving of 3.4 tCO2e. The use of electric vehicles, supplied by Rivian, as support vehicles also helped to save 8.3 tCO2e of carbon, a 70% saving on their petrol equivalents. The show also chose to use video conferencing technology through a partnership with Apple helped reduce the need for at least 20 transatlantic flights per person.
Long Way Up has chosen to mitigate the impact of the production’s carbon emission by protecting 81 acres of rainforest with Cool Earth in the Ashaninka community, as visited by Ewan and Charley on their Long Way Up journey. This represents 100x more than their actual carbon footprint.
The film and television production has the potential to be an enormous polluter. The industry is also capable of influencing low-carbon solutions well beyond its own production. As actors, producers and audiences alike become more aware of climate issues, it is vital that television productions begin to acknowledge their own emissions and responsibility in reducing their carbon footprint.
