Certification story

Ruxley Manor Garden Centre, a fifth-generation family run destination garden centre founded in April 1964 and based in Sidcup, Kent, has achieved Planet Mark certification. This is Ruxley Manor Garden Centre’s second year of business carbon footprint reporting.

Achieving the Planet Mark is based on the commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability in its business operations by measuring and reducing its carbon footprint and engaging its stakeholders.

Over the next year, the company will continue to reduce its carbon emissions and share its journey with its community to inspire others. By being more strategic about its environmental responsibility, it will be able to significantly increase its positive impact and hope to encourage continual improvements within its community.

“Ruxley Manor Garden Centre has taken a bold first step towards sustainability. Making the decision to commit to continuous improvement requires bravery and ambition. Their pledge will help reduce emissions across their business operations and make a real impact on the way the business is run. I am proud to work with businesses like Ruxley Manor Garden Centre that want to do business in the right way.”
James Evans
Managing Director
Ruxley Manor Garden Centre
“Sustainability and decreasing our carbon emissions are issues that we have been very keen to address and improve and we see Planet Mark as the perfect vehicle to enable us to do exactly that. As a garden centre, by the very nature of our business, we should be as green as possible. There are lots of things that we can improve upon and so we look forward to working with Planet Mark to ensure that we are driving forward with reducing our carbon footprint and engaging our team and the wider community whilst doing so.”

Ruxley Manor is making a conscious effort to reduce its negative impact on the environment and, where possible, support the local community around the company who have offered support since opening the centre in 1964. In this crucial Decade of Action, Ruxley Manor Garden Centre want to ensure that it is a force for good: positively transforming society and the planet by measuring its own impact on the environment.

Through Planet Mark Ruxley Manor is protecting an area of endangered rainforest thanks to Cool Earth; a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation. Their pledge through Cool Earth goes directly towards supporting the Asháninka community in Central Peru.

It is also helping the Eden Project – an educational charity building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how they can work together towards a better future.

Garden centres are custodians of nature. The wide-ranging environmental, health and social benefits to flora are well known. Garden centres must remain conscious of their supply chains to make sure they are sustainably and ethically, sourced. As modern consumer demands become increasingly conscious of the source of a product, nurseries should respond with their own rigorous and accountable approach to sustainability.

Future targets

Reduce carbon emissions by at least 2.5% each year

To recertify next year Ruxley Manor Garden Centre must reduce emissions by 2.5%.

Aim to reduce carbon emissions by 5% each year

A 5% year-on-year reduction is the target reduction recommended by Planet Mark.
